Getting Started

  • Always add enough liquid: Most Instant Pot recipes require at least 1 cup of liquid to reach pressure safely and cook evenly. This liquid also prevents scorching.
  • Understand 'Natural Release' vs. 'Quick Release': Natural pressure release (NPR) lets pressure dissipate slowly, ideal for stews and grains. Quick pressure release (QPR) involves manually venting, suitable for vegetables to prevent overcooking.
  • Sauté first for depth: Use the 'Sauté' function to brown meats or soften aromatics like onions and garlic before pressure cooking. This builds foundational flavor.
  • Avoid overfilling: Never fill the Instant Pot past the 'PC Max' line (usually 2/3 full), and only halfway for foods that expand, like beans or rice. Overfilling can block the vent.
